In this book Erak captured Will and Evanly; he intend to make them slaves. On their journey back to Skandia they ecountered a rough storm and had to stop in an island close to it. Erak warned them both that they will not be under tied up but any attempts to escape and the punishment will be severe. Halt meanwhile was trying to convince King Duncan to give him permission to go rescue his apprentice, Will, and Evanlyn but the king denies him, saying that he has more work to do here. Halt then publicly insults the king in public and was kicked out of the Ranger’s Corps. On his way Skandia, to rescue Will, Horace joins the part. They moved on to Gallica where they had to fight many rogue knights. After defeating a reasonable amount people knew Horace more. Halt then told Horace call himself the knight of Oakleaf to make him even more well known. Meanwhile Will was doing heavy task as a slave and he lost his spirit, became miserable and weak. He became addicted to warmweed which is an addicting stuff similar to drug which disable you to thing properly. Erak seeing this was depressed. He told Evanlyn to take Will and go hide up the mountain and wait after the winter before making their way back to Araulen.
My most favorite character in this story was Halt because he knows how to distinguish from right and wrong when he took pity on Will. It then actually decided the fates of the Skandians because in the next book the Temujai’s are going to invade them, and Erak is going to need the ranger’s help to drive them out.
