In this book Will is now a ranger. He was assigned to a fief, Seacliffe, which wasn’t as importance as Halt’s fief, which was Redcliffe, but he was just beginning a life as a ranger. On the way to his fief Will saw an injured dog on the road, it had a fatal wound. Will bandaged her up and took it along with him as a travelling companion. When he reached his fief he went into the cottage where he would be staying and read a note from the old ranger. After a few weeks staying at Seacliffe, Will realizes the poor situation in which it was in. Soldiers lack training, and the authorities were lazy. Just when things couldn’t get worse a Skandian raiding party arrived. The towns stand no chance defending against the Skandians. Will went into the Skandian camp and decided to reason with them. He found out that sooner or later they would have to raid a fief or else they would starve. Will said that if they would not attack the town would supply them with food. After knowing that the ranger was no other that Will Treaty, the Skandian agreed to leave in peace because he knew that if he attacked Will would tell Erak and he would be in trouble. After this incident the commander of the army said that he would start training the soldier properly but Will had no choice but to report this. Alyss arrives a few days later and informs Will that Halt is assigning him to a secret mission that involves some sort of sorcery. John Butler was listening outside and Will signaled Alyss to continue talking normally when Will lures him in and catch him. Will knocked Butler out but Alyss wanted him dead. Will did not think that was good so he gave him to the Skandians as a slave. Will’s mission was to disguise himself as a jongleur to investigate the so called sorcerery that was going on in the northern fief, Macindaw. Rangers weren’t trusted because some people even thought that they are the sorcerers, Jongleurs on the other hand is welcomed because people believed that they carry luck. Alyss was also assigned to the mission as Lady Gwendolyn. During their mission they figured out that people were seeing images of ghosts if they travelled up the Grimsell Woods. Will tried it and he was scared to death even though he is a ranger. Soon later Orman, the son of Lord Syron, discovered Will’s disguise and told him that he need help. His father, Lord Syron, was poisoned by no other that Keren , Orman’s cousin, a popular commander amongst the people. Will and Orman fled into Grimsell wood when they heard news of Keren’s rebellion. They carried Lord Syron andfled to Grimsell woods, knowing that Keren’s men would not dare to follow them there. Alyss was captured, when her disguised was blown because of Butlle the castle was now under the command of Keren. At the last bit of the story Will attempts a rescue Alyss but failed.
This is another interesting story in the Rangers Apprentice series and it got even better since Will was now a ranger. Overall the story was good and in this book it proved that Will's treaty with the Skandian had helped Araulen alot.
