This book is the first book in the sequel, The Dark is Rising
When Simon, Barney and Jane spent a holiday in Cornwall they decided to play hide and seek in the grey house. They then accidentally discover a door behind a massive wardrobe. Inside the door there were artifacts which they thought was owned by King Arthur. When they took a closer look they found and ancient map at first they didn’t know what this map was, Simon thought that it was a map leading to some sort of treasure but Jane keep insisting that they should put it back where they found it) so Jane took it to the book to Mr. Hawes who was a vicar. She soon found out that he had died a couple of years back. The new vicar seemed interest in the book and after they had a little chat Jane went back to the Grey House. The next day the house was ransacked nothing valuable was taken but the burglars seemed to be looking for something. Simon, Barney and Jane took the book to their great uncle merry and thought that he would know something about it. Then they found out that they were in grave danger. The war between darkness and the light has lasted since King Arthur and this map holds the key to the victor. It leads to the Holy Grail. There were spies everywhere the vicar was one of them. So together they were looked for they grail. They followed the map into a blow hole in which Barney and Simon entered to search for the grail. They didn’t find the grail instead they were ambushed by the evil people. Great Uncle Merry just in time managed to rescue them and the story ended with a cliffhanger.
This book was interesting at first but the middle and end was pretty boring.
